Ethos Advisor, Strategist
Jim Meffert
Understanding Purpose. Exploring Possibilities. Shaping the Future.
It’s more than a tagline. It reflects the way Jim Meffert approaches every engagement — helping people better understand who they are, imagine who they could become, and build the future they want to create.
Jim Meffert partners with leaders to understand purpose, explore possibilities, and shape the future. He believes the most effective strategies don’t begin with answers — they begin with listening. Through thoughtful questions, honest conversation, and disciplined inquiry, he helps organizations move beyond “what is” to imagine — and build — what could be.
Professional background
For more than 35 years, Jim has worked alongside leaders in associations, nonprofits, corporations, government, foundations, and higher education. Throughout his career, he has learned that strategy is not something an organization has — it is something an organization does. The strongest organizations create opportunities to continually learn, question assumptions, understand the changes around them, and adjust with intention.
Jim’s professional experience spans executive leadership, national advocacy, governance redesign, organizational transformation, leadership transitions, and consulting across sectors.
Before joining Ethos Advisors, he spent more than a decade as a principal consultant with Tecker International, partnering with organizations throughout North America on strategy, governance, and organizational effectiveness. Earlier in his career, he served as executive director of the Minnesota Optometric Association, led advocacy and chapter relations for national medical specialty societies including the American Medical Association and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and held leadership roles in civic and public policy organizations.
Working across associations, business, government, higher education, and nonprofit organizations has given Jim a broad perspective on leadership and organizational systems while reinforcing a simple truth: meaningful progress begins when people develop a shared understanding of what matters.

Speaking and facilitation
Organizations engage Jim when they want more than a strategic plan — they want a thinking partner.
Whether facilitating a board retreat, guiding a leadership transition, helping faculty imagine the future of higher education, or working with an industry to rethink its role in a changing world, Jim creates environments where people can think together, challenge assumptions, and discover new possibilities. His facilitation style combines thoughtful inquiry, practical experience, and a steady presence that helps groups navigate difficult conversations with confidence.
Community leadership
Jim believes leadership extends beyond professional work. His community involvement reflects the same commitment to helping people and organizations create opportunities for others.
He has served on numerous nonprofit and civic boards, including Normandale House, Child Care WORKS, the Minnesota Children’s Platform Coalition, and the Minnesota State PTA, serving in leadership roles including board chair, treasurer, and transition coach.
